The Bandit Rides Again! Reenactment of State v. William Ryan, October 13, 2017
In Person or Webcast
Description
Following the James-Younger Gang’s downfall and demise at the raid on the bank of Northfield, Minnesota on September 7, 1876, Frank and Jesse James went on a self-imposed criminal sabbatical. By 1879, Jesse had organized a new band of thieves, too young to have been veterans of the Civil War and too loose lipped to be dependable followers. The first escapade of Jesse and these juveniles took place on October 8, 1879 with the robbery of the Chicago & Alton Train at Glendale in eastern Jackson County. As the chronicle unfolded, it became clear that such factors as politics, disloyalty, betrayal and even alcohol played an integral role in leading to the beginning of the end of Frank and Jesse James. The cascading downward spiral would begin with an inebriated proclamation made by a known drunken recruit and would climax in the same building and courtroom in what is today known as the Historic Truman Courthouse of Jackson County at Independence.
This reenactment focuses upon the trial of one of those Glendale suspects in the case captioned, State v. William Ryan, a/k/a Whiskeyhead, for the Glendale Train Robbery.
