Film and the Law: "Primal Fear" Ethics and Resilience in Law:

Addressing Burnout, Secondary Trauma, and Implicit Bias

Wednesday, June 12, 2024 - Webinar only

"Ethics and Resilience in Law" integrates three pivotal topics - legal burnout, secondary trauma, and implicit bias - by emphasizing mindfulness as a key tool. The course explores how chronic stress and secondary trauma can compromise ethical decision-making and client advocacy, while also addressing how implicit biases, often intensified under stress, can affect judgments. By adopting mindfulness practices, attorneys can manage stress, enhance ethical clarity, and foster a more inclusive and competent approach to their practice, thus tying together these crucial aspects of legal professionalism.

Primal Fear, a 1996 legal thriller directed by Gregory Hoblit, follows the gripping story of Aaron Stampler (Edward Norton), an altar boy accused of murdering an archbishop. Richard Gere stars as Martin Vail, a high-profile defense attorney who represents Stampler pro bono. As the trial unfolds, Vail confronts a web of corruption and deceit within the legal system and the Church, and discovers Stampler's dissociative identity disorder, adding a complex twist to the case. The film delves into legal ethics, the justice system's manipulation, mental health challenges, and the moral quandaries attorneys face in their quest for justice.
